“We talked a bit on the way back to the station. It helped keep Lorie’s mind off of the migraine and mine off of, well, everything. Lorie told me as much as he could get from Raven’s memories about magic and how it worked and what he could figure out about hers. We were pretty close to Grand Central at that point, and we stuck to the shadows. No one paid any attention to us. When we were about halfway between Times Square and the train station, my phone started ringing. It was Ari. Turns out she’d been texting me the whole time, but I’d had my phone on vibrate, a holdover from the movie, so I hadn’t noticed. She was mad that I hadn’t responded. I guess I’d really freaked her out. She said that they’d made it back to the station and were actually on the train, although it wasn’t leaving for another 15 minutes. I told her I’d be there soon. I just trying to figure out what I was going to tell them about Raven . . .” Alex’s voice trailed away and he shook his head.

“So what did you?” Liza prompted.

“Did I?”

“Tell them.”

“Oh that.” Alex smiled a little. “I didn’t. I hung up on her before she could ask.”

Alex ran a hand ruefully through his hair. “I knew she’d be mad at me for that later, but I still hadn’t even figured out how to put it all into words for myself, let alone anyone else. I figured that that way I’d have till we got to the train to figure out how to explain it all. I was right, in a way, but it wasn’t quite the explanation I’d been planning to give.”
